Exactly what you expect - but worth the read. When Alan loses everything that is important to him - his wife and the life he has built with her - he just walks away from it all. It may sound crazy, but who hasn't wished they could just walk away from their troubles? Alan did, and started his unspeakable grief on the path to healing. There is really nothing new about the message, but it is presented in a way that reels the reader in. Alan and McKale do have it all - they have been friends since they were children, then married and began to live their dream life. Suddenly, it is all taken away, and Alan deals with his grief in a novel way - he starts walking. Along the way, people he meets touch him in unexpected ways and he gradually starts to leave his grief behind him and look toward the future. The first in a series, I really look forward to seeing who Alan meets next. This book is a timely reminder that we should all live in the present, and pay attention to the people we meet. We never know who is waiting to teach us something.

Low Price The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

My first experiences with this Halloween story were on old Halloween records my parents had and of watching the old Disney video in elementary school for Halloween. I realized though that I had never actually read the story itself. So I downloaded the free version on my Kindle.

Everyone should know this story, or at least have heard of it. It's about Ichabod Crane, the schoolmaster of Sleepy Hollow, and his run-in with the evil Headless Horseman.

This story is very well-written and enjoyable even after such a long time. I was surprised to find that the The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Disney Mini Classics) [VHS] was extremely accurate; so if you watch that short movie you will get a very good representation of the story.

Most of the story is spent setting things up and some of the descriptions can get a bit drawn-out and boring. At the same time some of the descriptions are also rather amusing and humorous.

All in all an excellent story that made for an interesting read. Might get a bit boring at parts for kids, but I was impressed at how funny some parts of it were too. If you get a chance to watch the Disney movie Sleepy Hollow, it is a great movie and really stays true to this story.

This free Kindle version had some slight formatting problems in a couple places, nothing too horrible but I did notice them.Get more detail about The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Gulliver's Travels Right now

All I remembered about Gulliver's Travels was the Golden Book or other children's versions of the story that I read when I was still a wee young thing. The real story is much more thought provoking, and the style is quite interesting. Swift writes about his travels to various countries where he encounters people and customs far different from what he is used to. Nevertheless, he writes from an objective viewpoint without discussing what is wrong or right about any of the cultures he visits.

The last place he visits is a country that is populated by extremely intelligent horses, who after hearing Gulliver's explanation of his own country and government, give their impressions of what is wrong with the English government and monarchy. Very tactful, but it makes the points he wants readers to understand. Many similar ideas to Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" come out in the horses' discussions.

A bit long. I thought it might be a bit childish at first. But it was well worth reading from cultural, political and historical points of view.Get more detail about Gulliver's Travels.

Star Wars: Lost Tribe of the Sith #3: Paragon Buy Now

Star Wars: Lost Tribe of the Sith #3: Paragon, by John Jackson Miller

Finally, there's some action in this ebook series! Lost Tribe of the Sith is a series to provide back story for the new Fate of the Jedi books. "Paragon" is the third installment.

All Star Wars fans know that if you leave two Sith in a room only one Sith is going to come out. The same is true of the crashed Sith on Kesh - their numbers are slowly dwindling, cut down by mainly by sabotage.

The native population of Kesh are now the servants of the Sith, most happily serving those they consider the descendants of gods. But Keshiri start dying in droves after some Sith visit their towns - what is the cause? Is it a new mysterious illness, or is there some darker force behind the mass deaths?

"Paragon" is a better story than the previous in the series. Seelah, the wife of the Sith ruler is shaping up to be an interesting character; at first I thought she was spoiled and annoying, but my opinion changed as I read. The author reveals her early life in flashbacks; the flashbacks also give some insight into the early Sith Empire. Readers new to the series should start with book one, "Precipice."

The Sea of Monsters Best Quality

I enjoyed "The Lightning Thief" but felt there was some room for improvement. I was pleased to see that improvement in this next installment. Part of this may be due to the fact that Percy, Annabeth, and Grover have already been established as characters, so there is no need for the exposition that accompanied the first. However, I also felt there were some more mature themes with this one that, while not completely developed, were handled pretty nicely.

The thing I enjoyed most about this book was the introduction of Tyson and the dynamic between him and Percy. I thought Riordan did a nice job of handling some pretty normal issues for kids, and I thought he did it in a sensitive manner. Though I was initially disappointed with how Percy handled things, I could understand where he was coming from, and I thought he showed a lot of growth. Percy is a fairly self-analytical character, and I think that's a fantastic element to have in any novel, really. It's a good message for young readers to see their hero questioning his own judgment and accepting his own guilt and responsibility.

I also thought that the inclusion of elements of mythology and the explanation of them were handled more deftly in this book than in the previous one. I really love the whole concept of these novels and the idea that Riordan is exposing children to Greek mythology, which is something that doesn't tend to be on the general curriculum these days. He really brings these mythological elements to life in this book, as when Percy visits "C.C.'s" island, or when he encounters Polyphemus.

Ultimately, I think Riordan has done a nice job laying the framework for a big showdown. I'm looking forward to reading the next installment.Get more detail about The Sea of Monsters.

The Silent Sea Get it now!

Clive Cussler and Jack Du Brul's THE SILENT SEA is a pick whether you choose the abridged narration by Jason Culp, a gifted actor who translates high drama to the tale, or unabridged with actor Scott Brick, who does a fine job with the complete version. Either way, the story revolving around the Oregon and a discovery linking a crashed satellite in Argentine to an ages-old mystery makes for a gripping thriller.

Solar Immediately

A Nobel winning physicist is approaching the descending side of his life. Michael Beard's had five wives with each marriage leaving a bigger pile of emotional junk in its wake. He can't or won't grow up. He just stays in motion hoping it will all sort itself out. It doesn't. It gets worse. By the end of the book there are sweltering piles of personal and professional cacao threatening to fall on him.

In classic McEwen style there is a pivot incident that changes or enhances the trajectory of Beard's life. The ensuing tragedy begets a kind of second life for him personally and publicaly. There are funny scenes in the book but no belly laughs. They're more of a one side of the mouth raised and a strangled guffaw type. Honestly this guy is so pathetic you want to jump into the book and drag him to safety, along with some of his hapless `victims'.

This wasn't one of my favorite McEwen novels but I still loved it. Especially wonderful was his description of southwest America. This is where his wry sense of humor really goes hot. The heat of this lonely area with its orange sunsets, the contrasts between the hyper cooled indoors and the stalking blanket of heat outside, the people who are at once expansive in their open hearts and provincial in their viewpoints. When you think of someone who's reached such a level as Beard's character there's a certain perception or expectation of sophistication and maturity. Beard defies such characterization. Toto's pulled the curtain away, by the end Beard is standing naked with a spotlight on him.

61 Hours (Jack Reacher, No. 14) Top Quality

61 Hours is a good, solid Jack Reacher novel. It's not one of the all time greats, but it's very far from being the worst either. It has momentum and unexpected twists and the tension builds slowly but steadily to a gripping ending. Lee Child seems to have taken on board some of the criticisms lobbied at his recent books. Reacher doesn't display unbelievable deductive powers, he doesn't bed any women in improbable circumstances and he doesn't always get things right.

The book is set in freezing South Dakota in the middle of a snowstorm. Reacher has hitched a ride on a bus tour of senior citizens. When the bus crashes, he finds himself in Bolton, the location for a recently built prison and headquarters for a gang of meth dealers. A drug dealer is in prison, facing trial, and the key witness is under police protection. The deputy chief of police asks Reacher to help him figure out what's going on and to keep the witness safe. From the book's outset we are counting down 61 hours to a major event, although it is some time before it becomes clear what that will be.

One of the things I particularly liked was the way that we learn more about Reacher's army background, personal history and appearance than we have to date. He develops a relationship that is his most honest and open in a long time. As usual, he is able to see things and reach conclusions that the local police can't. In the words of one character, he's "the sort of guy who sees things five seconds before the rest of the world."

Readers should be aware that this is the first Lee Child book that is not entirely self-contained. It ends with a cliff hanger and the words "to be continued". If you don't want a five month gap between installments, you may choose to wait to read this closer to the release date of the next book later in the year (it's due October 19).Get more detail about 61 Hours (Jack Reacher, No. 14).

Shop For Worst Case (Special Edition)

Patterson is prolific. The man must type nonstop to get all these books out.

Some of them aren't as good as the others. This isn't his best work. The story moved along, but didn't seem to build as much suspense as I expected. I'm trying to figure out if that's because he was trying to do too much at once. Without spoilering, I think maybe he was trying to advance some aspects of the character's development, while working the crime, while foreshadowing and dropping clues, while dealing with the family stuff, while being himself.

I love the characters and it's good to take an Alex Cross break.

I do recommend that you read this one. It IS a good read.Get more detail about Worst Case (Special Edition).

This novel is one of my all-time favorite books. Buying Sookie Stackhouse 8-copy Boxed Set

If you buy the paper books you get the series broken up into the 8 books. You can read then in any order you choose. With the kindle version there is no overall index you start the books with book one chapter one. THere is no overall index of the eight books, This renders the set into one really long book for all intents and purposes. IF you just want to pick and choose amoung the books this really sucks, really it's so difficult as to be unreasonable. If I had realized that before I would not have bought the set.

I have all of these in paper books I thought I would be able to replace those with this, WRONG! I want to be able to pick A BOOK in the set and start there. I don't think that was an unreasonable assumption and I feel cheated that it is in effect ALL ONE BIG BOOK!

Meh! I will NEVER BUY ANOTHER KINDLE BOOK SET!!!!

Cheap A Reliable Wife

I brought this book home despite it not being my usual type of romance and after hearing it was hard to get into. Though not typically romantic, more lusty and dirty, the writing compensates with a poetic and mesmerizing quality that doesn't make it feel offensive. It is essentially a love story, tackling issues of good and evil and how love changes people, even when they're not looking for it or see it coming.

Divided into 3 sections, covering about 6 months, it builds slowly and offers a twist or two. While some reviews say it's depressing, moving between winter in rural Wisconsin and St. Louis, the end offers hope and renewal. Its themes of finding love and a place to belong are timeless and could be written in any setting and still be relevant. Another review criticized this plot as being unoriginal, when in fact, most relationship stories are more or less the same and I thought this one was well done and a quick read, 3 maybe 4 hours at most. I have wasted far more time on books with higher acclaim only to be disappointed. This one might stick with you if you give it a chance.Get more detail about A Reliable Wife.

Cheapest Saving Sailor: A Novel

This is a nice, comfortable story. It takes you back to your childhood summers when you had no real cares other than fights with siblings. I enjoyed the story which is told from a ten year old's point of view. I thought the author did a good job in writing it as if the child was telling the story although it seemed that the further I got into the book, the more child-like some of the writing was. That didn't bother me too much. I didn't care a lot for the religious push at the end. There wasn't much in the beginning but in the end it seemed to really come into play and of course solved everything. I would've liked the ending better without that but it was still a very enjoyable read. I did find it hard to believe that A.J. would move away with her family for 8 years and they would not have taken Sailor, the beloved dog that she saved that was supposed to be her best friend. The A.J. in the story would never have been able to leave him behind. I think the only reason the author did that was to set up the meeting in the end and I think there was a better and more believable way to do that. Overall, the book was a fun read and worth the time.Get more detail about Saving Sailor: A Novel.
