From the first few pages, when Alice does something especially unexpected and vicious to her twin sister Bennie, the action in this book made my pulse race. Alice's motives, and the real toxicity of her plans, are revealed slowly and maddeningly, increasing the tension. There's a subplot involving Mary's colorful family, too.
I'm wording this carefully as not to be a spoiler -- there are many plot points that do not hold up under close scrutiny. And it's not high art -- there's little about this book you'll remember six months from now.
But it is terrific fun.
