The 9th Judgment

Some of the old James Patterson faults are there, such as, a not very interesting sadistic serial killer who targets mothers with children. This sort of murderer appears in most Patterson books. Then there's a female cat burglar/lesbian with a cruel husband. She just happens to be romantically involved with the sadistic killer's wife. Weird. There are also obligatory heterosexual scenes that are thrown in for the fifteen-year olds who may read this book.

But there are fewer obvious errors of fact and syntax, silly errors that a good editor should have caught. And there are no insulting passages in bold lettering to tell the dimbulb reader that This Is Important. In the past these have been standard fare. However, the book runs about twenty pages longer than it should. The author had a very good final line and they kept right on going.

This is not a mystery novel. As usual Patterson lets us know from the start who the killer is. Thus, there are really no surprises. We know that the come uppance is coming up and we know who is going to get it. This would have been much better had we not known the killer's name and motive--a la Agatha Christie, for example.

As someone who reads a book a week, and has interviewed dozens of authors for a radio program, I'll admit to some surprise over the negative comments about this book. I found it refreshingly engaging, a nice departure from the tired and overworked templates so many authors use today to bang out book after book. Scent does require the reader to suspend their disbelief, but no further than any of today's most popular books and cinema. The theater of the mind is where the book comes to life -- and if you're personal stage is small, so will be your impression of this book.

Buy Every Last One: A Novel

Having read the author's other books, and being a long-time fan from her newspaper days, I was so looking forward to her new book that I actually bought it (instead of waiting for a library copy). What a mistake. To begin with, the family is a New England stereotype, with the father a doctor (natch), the stay-at-home Mom with a quasi-job beautifying gardens, and the three kids that fit into little niches: The beautiful, brainy, bohemian daughter, the athletic son, and his nerdy misfit brother. The impending tragedy is forecast with a bullhorn on virtually every page, and all must be living under a rock to miss the signals. But the biggest challenge, is the protagonist is so very dull. I see no difference in her emotion pre and post-crime. She is simply relating events, and I was never swept into believing and feeling and actually seeing life's events through her eyes. Much of it is odd (she seems surprised that her son wants to see a therapist after the tragedy - would family counseling not be the first order of business?). Purchase Loving A Lost Lord

This was my first book by Mary Jo Putney, thanks to a Free Kindle Offer which I take advantage of because it introduces me to a new author and at least I don't waste my money on a book that I end up not liking. Having said that, I enjoyed this historical romance but will agree that some of the story line was a little farfetched but I did enjoy it enough to download the 2nd book in the Lost Lord Series which I read in a day and feel was much better written. If you are new to historial romances, this may be a great introduction to the genre, but after reading several of reviews of this book that mention MJP's book The Rake, I am going to have to check that one out.
