Classic Hemingway - great story, depressing ending. This book was published in 1952 and was his last work of fiction to be produced and published in his lifetime. The success of this book was a significant factor in Hemingway's selection for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. The book centers around an old Cuban fisherman named Santiago who has one of the great struggles against a giant marlin. For days he battles with this great fish and once he lands the prize and begins his journey back to land the story turns to his battle with the sharks who attack the great marlin which is strapped to the side of his little boat.
