I read this book a long time ago, and the haunting words of Hannah Baker are still in my head. This book is an absolute page-turner; I couldn't stop reading it. Page after page, chilling account after chilling account, I read straight through it in the span of three days. The time flew by while I was reading it, because I was absolutely sucked into another world: the world of Clay Jensen and the town he lived in.
There are two major characters in the story. First we have Hannah Baker who sent out thirteen audiotapes that had recordings of her voice in which she explained the thirteen reasons why she committed suicide. Clay Jensen is the other main character and he received the tapes. The story is told from his point of view, and there is a twist. It gives his thoughts just like traditional stories in normal fonts, but weaving in the tapes made by Hannah Baker in italic font, which is something I applaud Jay Asher for. That is one of the parts that hooked me to this book.
"You can't stop the future, you can't rewind the past. The only way to learn the secret is to... press play."
These lines gave me a good portrayal of the book. This is located on the back cover and the way letters are replaced with symbols gave me a haunting feeling which set me up for the book very well.
"And in the middle of the room, one desk to the left will be the desk of Hannah Baker."
"Empty"
That line from page 4 is one that gave the book an early start as far as chills go.
I would recommend this book for younger teenagers. This book contains a complex topic that is very real, and very frightening. It happens in real life and I think that kids around that age should be exposed so they know what's out there. If it were to be read as a class, it would make the experience and the amount they get out of it even better. I also think that parents of children around this age should read it so they know the symptoms of trouble for children around that age.
When you are done reading this you will receive a tough message pertaining to a tough topic... Teen suicide.
