This is easily the most original novel I have read in years. It's a series of self contained short stories, each focusing on a member of the newsroom of an international newspaper. The characters include a past his prime Paris correspondent, an obituary writer who suffers personal bereavement, the hard-nosed business editor who takes up with a charming loser, and most hilariously, an aspiring Cairo stringer who is sponged off by a hardened war correspondent. It is all tied up in the most unexpected manner, as the indifferent young owner of the paper is forced to pay attention to his business.
