I am also a Tudor junkie, and I found this story fascinating. Instead of being in the middle of the action with the main royal characters, we are seeing the Tudor Court through the eyes of Mary Howard, the youngest daughter of the Duke of Norfolk, one of Henry the VIII's Ministers. This gives us a unique perspective, since 'little Mary' is the proverbial fly on the wall. She sees and hears all the intrigue going on in the Court, mostly while remaining on the sidelines. Although mostly a static character, she is a sympathetic heroine, but mainly a sad one. I don't know how accurate the author's research is, but she paints a picture of the casual viciousness and virtual child abuse which Mary suffers at the hands of her father and other relatives that is truly horrifying. The brutality of the age is overpowering. Still, we get to see a portrait of Tudor life which I had never seen before in any other work about this age, and for that reason the book was well worth reading.
