Discount The Picture of Dorian Gray

This is the first book that I've read by Oscar Wilde and I generally enjoyed it.

The good: This book really made me think and the premise was very intriguing. It was well written and the characters were interesting. I loved the dialogue between the characters and felt that it enriched the story rather then hindered it. The author kept me guessing on how the book was going to end and then the ending still surprised me.

The bad: The book started out slow. I didn't really get into it until 30% of the way through. Then about half way through the book, the author takes a major detour in the storyline. He makes time pass by telling (not showing) all of the different interests of Dorian throughout the years. This takes up a large chunk of the book and is very boring. I believe the storyline would have benefited more if the author would have focused on Dorian's "sins" then on his various interests that kept him distracted throughout the years. As it is, the author only hints at some of the horrible things that happened in Dorian's life. It was very unsatisfying. I'm definitely not a scholar and so I might have missed the significance in what I perceived as ramblings.

Overall, a worthwhile read even if the the middle was boring and unnecessary.Get more detail about The Picture of Dorian Gray.
